What is a practice nurse?

An advanced nurse practitioner is a registered prescribing nurse who is qualified through advanced training to see patients with urgent and acute problems, long term conditions and health promotion, and making referrals to secondary care as appropriate. They also fit and remove contraceptive implants.

At Blackford House Medical Centre, we have an advanced nurse practitioner and team of nurses who will look after patients suffering from a range of conditions. These can include:

  • Asthma care
  • Baby and child immunisations
  • Blood tests
  • Cervical smears
  • Contraceptive pill checks
  • Diabetes care
  • Management of blood pressure
  • Smoking cessation
  • Travel health and immunisations
  • Well woman/Well man checks

What is a healthcare assistant?

Healthcare assistants support practice nurses with their daily work, and carry out tasks such as phlebotomy, blood pressure measurement and new patient checks. They may also act as a chaperone when a patient or doctor requests one.
