An Advanced Nurse Practitioner is a registered prescribing nurse who is qualified through advanced training to see patients with urgent /acute problems (chest, skin, ENT, eyes, urine infections, musculoskeletal problems,  gynae problems, contraception), long term conditions and health promotion, making referrals to secondary care as appropriate.  She also fits and removes the contraceptive implant.

The nurses provide a wide range of services including:

  • Cervical smears
  • Asthma care
  • Diabetes care
  • Smoking cessation
  • Management of blood pressure
  • Baby and child immunisations
  • Travel health and immunisations
  • Well Woman/Well Man checks
  • Contraceptive Pill checks
  • Blood Tests

The Nurses receive telephone calls at the end of each surgery. Should a patient require an urgent conversation with a Nurse normally the Nurse will ring the patient back at the end of his or her current consultation.

Full telephone consultations using the normal booking system are also available with nurses and GP’s if considered appropriate after triage.

Healthcare Assistants

Healthcare assistants support practice nurses with their daily work and carry out tasks such as phlebotomy (drawing blood), blood pressure measurement and new patient checks. They may act as a chaperone when a patient or doctor requests one.
